Day 26, The Aliens of Roswell

We had a lot of driving to do, and two days to do it. I was woken up early, we were heading out early that way we could most of the driving out of the way today so tomorrow we could just drive a couple hours to San Antonio. The plan was going great, we were making great time and since the roads were straight we decided to let Daniel take a chunk out of the driving. Ben started off the drive, and then Daniel drove a couple hours all the way to Roswell. The stories of Roswell seemed kind of unbelievable to me, but once we arrived in the town it began to make sense a little more.

So the myth is that in the 1950's 'UFO's' were crashing in Roswell, New Mexico. People began to call them 'dummy drops'. Some people even thought that these crashes were UFO's falling from the sky, the people that found the drops found aluminum and latex and began to think they were extraterrestrial creatures the government had victimized and used as test subjects. The government assured them that these 'dummy drops' were actually experiments to try to have pilots survive high speed drop crashes. They put in dummies with latex skin and aluminum bones. Lots of people still believe the UFO and Alien myth. Crazy right?

Because our movie had a backup plot that 'the aliens were conspiring against the main characters' we had to check it out. We parked the Rv in the visitor center. Just in the short drive through part of Roswell it was kind of shocking how many murals and souvenir shops there were all about aliens. When we entered the visitor center I was surprised to see plastic Aliens, they had a setup to take pictures of people in between the aliens. We just had to right? So we took pictures and then walked a few blocks to the well known UFO museum. We bought passes and toured around the museum. There most main exhibit was a alien model. There were 4 plastic aliens that every 5 minutes would make 'alien noises' while this happened they had disco lights behind them that made the aliens light up pink, green, and blue. Behind the aliens there was a UFO. When the Aliens lit up it would spray out fog, and start spinning and rise as if it was flying. It was a pretty cool set up. Around the outside of the museum there was a timeline. A timeline with dates and locations of the 'dummy drops'.

It seemed pretty believable, and now I'm left with a thought of "what was actually real?" We spent over an hour in Roswell. We had lost some major time and now our time of arrival was about 8. (including the time change.) We drove for a while on the flat straight rode, nothing really to look at besides miles and miles of flat Texas land. We had to stop somewhere to eat dinner so we pulled off at a rest stop and made dinner. I wanted to get back on the road so we would get to our planed out RV park before midnight. Ben said that we would leave when we were ready. Then proceeding to say that it was my turn to clean up. I gave up on my need to leave and headed into the Rv. I plugged in my phone to the AUX and started playing music.

I was enjoying having alone time, time without my family less then 10 feet away from me. I didn't want to be bothered but yet again that wasn't the most important thing. I was barged into multiple times with my parents asking me whether or not I was done, They did this every 5 minutes or so, So sadly my relaxing alone time turned into 'hurry up we have to leave' it became funny by the end that they couldn't leave me alone. Like one minute they want to eat outside and get away from the Motor Home, next they can't wait to be back in the cramped Rv. By the end of it I told them that if they wanted me to finish they had to leave me alone and if they were going to be inside the Rv that they could finish it themselves. They finished it themselves. Reverse psychology? Yea maybe.

Once they had finished we began to drive the remaining three hours to Menard County Rv Park. We drove opposite to the setting sun. When I looked behind us I saw bright orange, red, and pink clouds. As the sun set the sky turned dark. Our arrival wasn't until midnight so I prepared myself for a long night drive.
