We had to drive quite a ways today, more then we would have liked, especially because we didn't wake up till almost 10 (unlike usual). We packed up our stuff, and almost immediately began the travel to Mississippi. The drive passed by fast, we were crossing the Mississippi river in no time, the river was flooding higher then most years. The road was almost underwater, the flooded areas were just a couple feet below the road. I was sitting up front, Daniel was driving and we saw a truck driving through the marshy water, apparently he was driving on the road but it sure looked like he was just chugging along in the water. Some parts of the road were gravel because of the flooding, and it got worse and worse as we traveled. There were signs all along the road saying 'Finish the Pumps'. They were protesting against the flooding that had been going on for over 70 years.
People were protesting and trying to get the ETA to pump out the water. But they were continuously being shut down. Some houses had to take boats from their houses to the road because the water line was about to seep through the cracks under the door. One lady wrote online that she was afraid to leave her dogs alone in her house because of alligators. It was sad to me as we passed dozens of houses that were nearly underwater, and those were only the ones we could see. I didn't understand why they didn't just move out, then I remembered this had been getting increasingly worse for 70 years or so. Imagine instead of getting in your car to leave you got in a boat, or that you had to mop up water every day off your floor. These real world problems seeped into my head, I couldn't live how these people did, I was surprised even these people could.
The flooding lessened as we got closer to Vicksburg. When we arrived, we got parking right by the theater, and then toured around a few blocks of the town. A storm seamed to be rolling in. Little drops of water sprinkled on our heads as we walked, distant thunder rumbled. The storm never really hit but the air was still cold and we were thinking that we didn't really need to plug in tonight. The movie started to show at 6. The audience was very exc\\
ited to watch the movie, over half the chairs were filled. We were planning to drive about half an hour tonight to our nighttime spot. The lights of Vicksburg faded away behind us and in my imagination the lights of New Orleans began to dimly glow. Next up on the Phoenix, Oregon Movie Tour is the Zeitgeist Theater & Lounge in New Orleans playing at 7pm. See you there!
